Best Paleo Protein Powders in 2020

If you have been Paleo for some time and also do workouts you probably wonder if there are good Paleo-friendly supplements that would help you reach your goals.

The supplements itself together with the proper diet and exercises may be a powerful tool that will allow you to reach your bodybuilding goal.

One of the most common supplements to take is protein powders.

By taking the protein powder after the workout you will be able to recover the muscle tissues faster and also increase your muscle weight.

And because traditional protein powders contain a lot of Paleo-non-compliant ingredients, it does not mean that you cannot benefit from this type of supplement while following the Paleo Diet.

The health and fitness industry progresses very fast. And indeed there are a lot of Paleo-compliant protein powders available for you!

Here we will review 10 best Paleo and Primal protein powders that you may want to consider for muscle building and weight loss.

What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet is based on the idea of eating foods that our ancestors used to eat and what our bodies are actually designed to digest.

The Paleo Diet follows the two main principles:

1) Eat whole foods and

2) Avoid processed and refined foods.

best-paleo-protein-powderMother-nature created us to allow digest whole foods, meaning the foods in a form provided by nature.

The foods in its non-natural way our bodies have a hard time to deplete and digest, that results in a lot of health issues (causing inflammation not only in our intestines but sometimes in our whole body).

Processed foods like grains, pasteurized dairy products, factory-made seed oil (like canola, sunflower, soy, corn oils), refined and artificial sugar – they all went through factory before being consumed by us.

What it means to us is that being processed in all that form, these foods lost most of their health benefits and are not good to us anymore.

That type of food is eat-able.

But is it good for our health?

What Can You Eat on The Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet principles are very easy to follow:

1. Eat whole foods

2. Avoid processed and refined foods.

Now you probably wonder what exactly does it mean?

The following foods are NOT recommended for eating while on the Paleo Diet:

1. Grains (including wheat and soy)

2. Refined and Artificial sugar

3. Processed seed and vegetable oils (like corn, canola, cottonseed etc)

4. Dairy

5. Legumes (including beans)

6. Alcohol

7. Coffee (allowed to have a limited amount).

It is that simple.

And if it looks very restrictive, think of all other foods that are available to consume, like:best-paleo-protein-powder

– meat, poultry, and seafood

– vegetables and fruits

– unrefined virgin oils (like coconut, olive, avocado)

– natural sweeteners (in limited amounts like pure maple syrup, raw honey, Stevie)

– non-gluten and grain-free flours (like almond and coconut flour)

– nut butter (like almond butter, tahini) etc.

What is Protein Powder and How It May Help you?

Protein plays an important role in muscle building.

Protein powders are dehydrated forms of protein derived from milk, soy, and plants.

Typically you can consume the protein powder by mixing it with water or any other beverage or add it to your food to increase protein consumption (for example, by adding it into the home-made cookies or granola bars) (1).

If you go to the gym, your personal trainer may remind you to take protein after the workout. Taking the protein after 30 minutes of the workout will help to repair muscle tissues and actually build muscles.

However, if you are an athlete, then taking protein within 30 minutes after the workout will provide you with the most effective and benefits of muscle building process.

And the powder protein works great for that purpose.

Paleo Diet and Protein Powder?

As I have mentioned earlier there are certain foods that are not recommended consuming while on the Paleo Diet.

Therefore for those of us who would like to build muscles, it looks almost impossible to find Paleo-friendly supplements.

But the good news is that the supplement companies thought of us and created Paleo-friendly protein powders.

Another thing to consider is whether the Protein powder is generally compliant based on the Paleo diet principles.

Do you remember that one of the Paleo diet principles is to not consume processed foods?

Well, the protein powder should definitely be considered as a processed type of food, as it went through the factory and lost its whole foods nature.

But if thinking about it, by cooking food we also process food.

My point is that if your primary goal is weight loss and muscle building, supplementing with the Paleo-friendly protein powder will not hurt you, as long as the ingredients are compliant with Paleo guidelines.

What Are The Best Paleo Protein Powders?

The supplement market follows the trend and provides us with plenty protein powder options.

The purpose of this review is to provide you with the best Paleo and Primal protein powders based on the ingredient list, taste and price.

1. Paleo Protein Powder by PaleoPro

This is an amazing product for people following both the Paleo and Primal diets.

The protein powder contains the following main ingredients:

  • Grass-Fed Lean Beef Protein
  • Egg Protein
  • Sunflower Lecithin

PaleoPro uses a natural sweetener like Stevie Leaf extract.

This is one of the protein powders that contain 100% Paleo-compliant ingredients.

The powder comes in three tastes:

  • Ancient Cacao
  • Aztec Vanilla
  • Plain Naked

For this review, we tried ancient cacao flavor.

It definitely tastes great!

The only thing we did not like is that it took a little time for the powder to be completely dissolved. Though we used room-temperature water. However, if you are not in a hurry, leaving it soaking and then shake it couples of times in the shaker was more than enough for us to enjoy the drink.

Similar to the whey protein powders it contains 25 grams of protein in 1 serving and is dissolvable in 12 oz of water for the better taste.

2. Protein Powder by Paleo Thin

Another fantastically tasting 100% Paleo-compliant protein powder.

The company uses egg white proteins instead of whey protein.

It still provides you with plenty of protein intake, enough for a great post-workout recovery.

The ingredient list is minimal, containing the following two main ingredients:

  • Egg white powder
  • Sunflower Lecithin

The brand uses Monk Fruit extract as a sweetener that is 100% compliant with the Paleo Diet principles.

This is one of a few protein powders that provides you with an amazing flavor variety. The protein powder comes in the following flavors:

  • Double chocolate
  • Espresso
  • Glazed Donut
  • Plain
  • Vanilla
  • Vanilla Nut

Honestly, we loved this protein powder. For the purpose of this review, we tested the double chocolate. And guess what?

With hot water added, it tastes just like the hot chocolate!

Unlike the whey protein, egg white protein seems to be dissolving amazingly great.

And once again, the flavor variety is impressive!

3. Paleo Beef Protein Powder Isolate by Equip

This is also one of our favorite 100% Paleo-compliant protein powder.

The brand uses beef protein as the main ingredient. And that is it!

It also uses Stevie Leaf Powder as a sweetener that is totally compliant with the Paleo diet principles.

It comes in 2 main flavors such as:

  • Chocolate
  • Vanilla

Surprisingly the mixture dissolves very well in the water and provides you with the nice creamy texture.

It is a fantastic product that will suit pretty much anybody, as it uses the beef protein that usually causes less food intolerance compared with the egg one.

However, we found that the price for this Paleo-friendly protein powder was among the highest.

4. Bone Broth Protein Powder by Ancient Nutrition

If you noticed paleo-friendly protein powders uses different protein substitutes for the whey protein.

The most common ones will be beef and egg protein.

Another very popular and nutritious protein substitute will be bone broth protein.

Bone Broth Protein Powder by Ancient Nutrition is definitely one of our favorites.

And there are couples of reasons for that.

One of them is the availability of different tastes!

The main ingredient in this protein is chicken bone protein concentrate.

Other ingredients that the company uses to make this protein powder taste amazing are:

  • xantham gum
  • guar gum
  • stevia (leaf)
  • monk fruit extract

The Bone Broth Protein Powder comes in a variety of flavors such as:

  • Chocolate
  • Cinnamon Apple
  • Coffee
  • Greens
  • Pure
  • Turmeric
  • Vanilla

That is an astonishing variety of flavors to chose from!

We tried the chocolate mix and we loved it. The powder easily dissolves in the water and provides with the creamy texture.

We loved the drink but we wished the company used organic ingredients to make it 100% Paleo. Though the cost of the product would change too.

5. Paleo Protein Powder by Clovis

This company specializes specifically in the protein powders for weight loss, digestion improvements, post-workouts etc.

For this review, we picked the post-workout protein powder that the company offers as it will suit the best for the purpose of this review.

Clovis products have the most ingredients included in the protein powders such as:

  • Beef collagen peptides
  • Flaxseed powder
  • Guar gum
  • Sweet potato powder
  • Kale powder
  • Gum Arabic

The following sweeteners are used in the post-workout powders:

  • Organic coconut sugar
  • Stevie Leaf Extract
  • Monk Fruit Extract

The Protein powder comes in two flavors:

  • Cacao
  • Vanilla

We tried cacao version and we were surprised with the pleasant flavor. Though for our taste buds it was a little too sweet. And we also did not like the fact of coconut sugar being added. We still consider it as refined sugar. And it cannot be treated as Paleo-friendly.

Other than that the taste was great and the texture was nice and smooth.

However, we also wish the price for this product was more affordable. However, you can get a good discount on the Amazon subscription if you decide to go with this powder.

6. Ascent Native Fuel Whey Protein Powder

The next 5 protein powders will be more suited for the Primal diet followers as the main ingredient of these powders will be whey protein that is derived from the cow milk.

Great protein powder that includes 5 main ingredients, including:

  • Whey Protein Isolate
  • Native Whey Protein Isolate
  • Whey Protein Concentrate
  • Soy Lecithin

The brand uses an extract of monk fruit as a sweetener for its flavored mixes, which is a natural sweetener and is allowed on the Primal diet.

It comes in 5 flavors:

  • Cappuccino
  • Vanilla Bean
  • Chocolate
  • Lemon Sorbet
  • Unflavoured

We tested the cappuccino flavor and it was amazing!

When you first open the package you could feel an amazing smell of coffee.

The mix itself is very smooth and with approximately 8 oz it tastes similar to a real cappuccino.

Ascent Whey Protein contains 25g of whey protein per serving, which is equivalent to the amount of protein found in 3 full cups of whole milk, 3 (8oz) servings of yogurt, 4 large eggs, 1 small chicken breast, or ¾ cup of almonds.

So really you will fulfill your muscle post-recovery stage easily with this drink!

The price for it is an average on the market, though it is not the cheapest option.

If you are looking for the best flavor and quality, no gluten, no artificial flavors and an amazing flavor, this protein powder will be the best suit for you!

7. 100% Grass Fed Whey Protein by Levels

Are you looking for a 100% grass fed whey protein?

We got you covered!

This protein powder contains only 2! main ingredients, that include:

  • Grass-Fed Whey Protein Concentrate
  • Non-GMO Sunflower Lecithin

The brand uses 2 natural sweeteners for its flavored mixes, that includes:

  • Stevie Leaf Extract.

Both sweeteners are Primal-compliant.

100% Grass Fed Protein Powder comes in 4 flavors:

  • Chocolate Mocha
  • Pure Chocolate
  • Vanilla Bean
  • Unflavoured

We tested the chocolate mocha version and we loved it!

It is one of our favorite protein powders among the all tested for a couple of reasons.

It needs only 8-12oz of water or other liquid to have a fantastic taste!

It dissolves in pretty much anything (even in cold almond milk) and provides you with the smooth consistency.

Each scoop of the flavored protein powder contains 24 grams of protein, while unflavored version contains 26 grams!

Great protein powder for its price and quality!

8. Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate Powder by Jay Robb

This is definitely the taste winner protein powder!

The powder has the following ingredient list:

  • Whey Protein Isolate
  • Sunflower Lecithin
  • Xantham Gum

Even though the powder tastes fantastic we did not like the fact that it includes Xanthum Gum.

Xanthum Gum has controversial reviews and we do not feel it is a great suit for Primal or Paleo diet (2).

This protein powder uses the following sweeteners in it flavored variations:

  • Stevie Leaf Extract

The protein powder tastes fantastic!

It comes in 5 flavors, such as:

  • Chocolate
  • Strawberry
  • Tropical Dreamsicle
  • Vanilla
  • Unflavoured

This is one of the few protein powders that have some unusual flavors like Strawberry and Tropical Dreamsicle tastes. Which makes it an amazing add-on to the fruit smoothies!

Each scoop contains 25 grams of protein and 26 grams – in unflavored option.

Definitely one of the best protein powders that will fully satisfy your taste buds!

9. Primal Fuel Whey Protein Powder by Primal Kitchen

This is another favorite of ours!

This product has the following main ingredients:

  • Whey Protein Isolate
  • Inulin (from Chicory Root)
  • Coconut milk
  • Guar Gum

Another great product for people following the Primal diet, as this protein powder also contains whey protein.

The only concern with this ingredient list is the presence of Guar gum that has controversial views about consuming it.

It is recommended to avoid the consumption of Guar gum in high amounts in any type of supplements as it can cause certain side effects like:

  • constipation
  • choking
  • obstruction of the esophagus or intestines etc (3)

The product contains the following sweeteners:

  • Stevie Leaf Extract

The powder comes in two flavors:

  • Chocolate
  • Vanilla coconut

We tried the chocolate version of it and it is definitely one of the tastiest protein powders we tried. The texture is very consistent and light.

10. Organic Whey Protein Powder by Natural Force

One of the best whey protein powders on the market for the reasonable price.

As you can guess, this protein powder will be a great suit for the Primal diet followers.

The protein powder contains the following main ingredients:

  • Organic Whey Protein Concentrate
  • Organic Stevie Leaf Powder

And that is it!

Despite having such a short ingredient list, the powder dissolves very good and tastes amazing.

It comes in the following flavors:

  • Cacao Bean
  • Coffee Bean
  • Vanilla Bean

For the purpose of this review, we tried the cacao bean protein powder and were impressed with the taste, texture and what is the more important price!

I like the sound of the bone broth protein powder. I wonder if the health effects of bone broth will be lost due to the processing necessary?
Anyway, this is an extremely useful post and there’s been a real need for something like this. thanks a lot!
